Southfield, Mich. — The Youngstown State Men's Tennis team took on Detroit on Saturday, defeating the Titans 4-3 at the Franklin Athletic Club in its Horizon League opener. The Penguins won four singles matches and one doubles match.
In singles play, three out of the four wins were in straight sets. In the first singles match, Tariq Ismail improved individually to 11-6 by defeating Nick Tolomei 6-2, 6-3. Dawoud Kabli took on Mike Basha and beat him 6-2, 7-5 in the No. 4 singles spot. Rodrigo Campos went up against Pablo Nunez 6-3, 6-0. In No. 6 singles, Felipe Rosa defeated David Streeter 2-6, 6-1, 6-4. Rosa was not originally in the lineup, but stepped in and won the deciding match.
Tariq Ismail and Dawoud Kabli won a close match in the No. 1 doubles game with a score of 9-8.
Head Coach Mark Klysner was very pleased with the match.
"I am so proud with the way the guys bounced back in singles after losing the doubles point," Klysner said. "It was a typical intense conference match and the guys showed they wanted the win more than Detroit did. Very happy for Felipe and his clinching victory for us. Having to last minute step in and play isn't easy when it's your second match of the year. Looking forward to next week versus Cleveland State."
The Penguins continue their away campaign on Saturday, March 31 at noon against Cleveland State and Sunday April 1 at Ohio State, which is ranked fourth in the country.
