YSU Comes Up Short Against Green Bay, 4-3

Boardman -- The Youngstown State men's tennis team won three singles matches, but came up short losing 4-3 to Green Bay on Friday at the Boardman Tennis Center. YSU won at No. 2, No. 5 and No. 6 singles against the Phoenix.

YSU dropped the doubles point and the Phoenix won the first three concluded singles matches, before winning the final three matches of the night. YSU is now 7-8 overall and 2-1 in Horizon League play. Green Bay improves to 14-5 and leads the league at 3-0.

Winning at No. 2 singles was Silviu Mistreanu over Michael Tenzer. Mistreanu dropped the first set 6-2, but rebounded to win the next two 7-6 and 10-6.

At No. 5, Rodrigo Campos also rallied after dropping the first set. Campos dropped the opener 6-4 to Christoph Hopfe before rallying to win the second set 6-4. Campos won the deciding third set 12-10.

At No. 6, Zeeshan Ismail won his first set 6-1 over Henning Jess. Jess forced a third set with a 6-2 win, but Ismail earned the win posting a 6-4 decision at No. 6.

Green Bay earned wins at No. 1 as Paul Swanson beat Tariq Ismail 6-2, 6-0; Erik Finkenbrink beat Dawoud Kablit 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3 and Craig Cox won 6-3, 6-2 over Max Schmerin at No. 4.

In doubles play, the Phoenix picked up the point winning at No. 1 and No. 2. At No. 3, Zeeshan Ismail and Mistreanu won 8-4 over Swanson and Jess.

The Penguins return to action on Wednesday when they play at Robert Morris.
