YSU Battles No. 59 Stetson; Campos Earns Victory
DeLand, Fla. -- The Youngstown State men's tennis team put forth a strong effort against No. 59 Stetson on Wednesday night. Sophomore Rodrigo Campos picked up a win at No. 6 singles to highlight the night while the Penguins lost 6-1.
Campos fought back against Jacobo Herrero to force a winner-take-all third set. Herrero won the first set 6-4 before Campos rallied with a 6-3 win the second. Campos won a single point in the third set to earn the victory.
At No. 2 singles, Silviu Mistreanu nearly forced a third set but dropped the second set tiebreaker. Didrik Berg of Stetson defeated Mistreanu by a score of 6-2, 7-6. At. No. 3, Max Schmerin held a 4-1 lead in the second set before dropping a 6-1, 7-5 decision to Hans Adrian Riseng.
Tariq Ismail dropped a 6-0, 6-3 decision at No. 1 to Njal Stene, Dawould Kabli lost 6-3, 6-2 to Nathan Debut at No. 4 while Zeeshan Ismail lost 6-2, 6-2 to Chester Espie at No. 5.
In doubles action, Zeeshan Ismail and Mistrean teamed up for an 8-5 win over Dane Moran and Chris Hyma. However, the Hatters won the doubles poing with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles.
The Penguins return to action on March 24 when they open Horizon League play at Detroit.
