YSU Continues Winning Streak, Defeats Dayton 6-1
Boardman - The Youngstown State men's team won its fourth match of the season and first at home this year with a 6-1 win Dayton on Wednesday at the Boardman Tennis Center.
The Penguins (4-3) are on their longest winning streak since October 2009 following the win over the Flyers (2-8). YSU won the doubles point then took five of six singles matches in the victory. Four of the five Penguins' singles wins were in straight sets.
The Guins took a 1-0 lead winning the doubles point. Sebastian Hagn and Dawoud Kabli teamed up at No. 1 doubles to earn a 8-4 decision of Dayton's Aidan Koross and Robert Salcedo. At No. 3, Silviu Mistreanu and Felipe Rosa knocked off Andrew Hanley and Colin Bernier 8-2.
Rodrigo Campos cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 5 over Dayton's Kyle MacDonald. At No. 6, Rosa earned a 6-4, 6-3 win over Bernier. Hagn won a back-and-forth first set 7-5 versus Andrew Hanley before taking the second set 6-1. Kabli knocked off Salcedo 6-3, 6-4 at No. 4 singles.
In the final match, Mistreanu came from a set down to beat Koross. Mistreanu dropped the first set 3-6 before winning a second-set tiebreaker 7-6 and eventually holding on for a 6-4 win in the third set.
Campos, Hagn and Mistreanu have each picked up four straight wins while Rosa improved to 5-2 in dual play.
YSU returns to the courts on Friday, March 8 when it plays host to St. Bonaventure. The match is set for a 7 p.m. start at the Boardman Tennis Center.
