Penguins Drop First Round Match to Detroit

Indianapolis, Ind. - The third-seeded Youngstown State men's tennis team was upset 4-2 by No. 6-seed Detroit on Friday afternoon in the first round of the Horizon League Tennis Championships at the Barbara S. Wynne Tennis Center on the campus of North Central High School.

YSU (12-9) lost the doubles point and faced the situation of having to win four singles from the Titans (9-13). The Guins were able to get two matches off Detroit, but could not come all the way back.

The Titans took the doubles point behind an 8-6 win at No. 1 shortly after claiming an 8-3 victory at No. 2.

In singles play, the Penguins fell behind when Zeeshan Ismail dropped a 6-3, 6-4 decision at No. 4. YSU bounced back to tie the match behind a 6-3, 6-3 win by Silviu Mistreanu over Mike Basha at No. 1 and a Rodrigo Campos 7-6, 6-2 win at No. 5 over Chris Cheung.

Cesar Serrano Escobar brought the Titans within a single win of the match, collecting a 6-3, 7-6(3) win at No. 2 over Sebastian Hagn.

As the No. 6 singles match between Max Schmerin and Rafael Orantes wound down in the third set, Felipe Rosa was unable to hold on against Alex Latosinsky at No.3 to prolong the match. Rosa won the first set 7-5 before falling 6-2, 6-4. Schmerin led his match 5-4 in the third set.

The Penguins now face UIC in the fifth-place match on Saturday morning.
