Boardman - Silviu Mistreanu and Dawoud Kabli advanced to a pair of Flight finals following solid performances on Saturday at the YSU Fall Invitational at the Boardman Tennis Center. Mistreanu and Kabli will go for Flight titles on Sunday at 9 a.m.
Also on Saturday, Sebastian Hagn and Kabli advance to the doubles championship match with two victories. The pair will try to take the doubles title against Wright State's top pairing of Ricardo Pineda and Dan Gilbert at 8 a.m. on Sunday.
Zeeshan Ismail will play in the Flight B consolation as well.
Tomorrow morning, Mistreanu faces ASA's Tim Srkala for the championship while Kabli will face Saint Francis' Kyle Korus.
Head Coach Mickael Sopel was excited about the Penguins' results on Saturday.
"Silviu has been playing better and better throughout this tournament," he said. "I expect a very intense match for Silviu tomorrow against Srkala".
Mistreanu earned a 6-2, 6-5 (4) over Wright State's Lauri Makikalli in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, he beat Alex Aleman of Duquesne 6-3, 6-1. In the other semifinal, Hagn lost 6-2, 6-3 to Srkala. Hagn beat Duquesne's Rich Robbie 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinals.
Kabli defeated Wright State's Krill Kuitinov 6-5 (6), 6-2 in the quarterfinals before ousting Duquesne's Matt Slemecka 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinals.
"I think this tournament is definitely a breakthrough for Dawoud," Sopel said. "I am very excited for him. I hope he will carry that out into his final tomorrow and gain some more confidence for this spring."
Ismail rebounded from a day one defeat to beat Saint Francis' Sergio Carvajal 6-3, 6-4 in the consolation quarterfinals and bested RMU's Eduardo Rodriques 6-3, 6-2 in the semifinals. He will face SFU's Elijah Cerdan in the consolation finals.
In doubles play, Hagn and Kabli beat ASA's Rafael Alvarez and Jack Boling 8-4 in the quarterfinals before beating Duquesne's Max Rubin and Corey Robinson 8-6 in the semifinals.
