Penguins Pick Up 6-1 Victory Over Northern Kentucky

Boardman - The Youngstown State men's tennis team picked up a 6-1 win over Northern Kentucky on Saturday night at the Boardman Tennis Center.

YSU came out strong to earn the doubles point before winning five of six singles matches against the Norse. With the win, YSU improves to 8-10 overall and 2-2 in Horizon League play while NKU drops to 2-11 and 0-5 in the league.

YSU picked up wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to clinch the point quickly. At No. 1, Joao Garretto and Vasilis Vardakis defeated Blaine Carr and Andrew Niehaus by a score of 6-2. At No. 2, Yossi Dahan and Danylo Veremeichuk beat Felipe Hidalgo and Jorge Rodriguez 6-1.

In singles play, Veremeichuk, Vardakis, Bassem El Mekawi, Matthew Kritzinger and Dahan all earned victories.

At No. 6, Dahan earned a quick 6-1, 6-0 win over Anthony Bosch. Mekawi played well in a 6-2, 6-4 triumph against Chris Murray at No. 4. At No's 1, 3 and 4 the Guins picked up wins in tiebreakers to claim victories.

Veremeichuk earned a 7-6, 6-4 win at No. 1, Vardakis picked up a 7-5, 7-6 win at No. 3 and Kritzinger earned a 7-5, 7-6 victory at No. 5.

The Penguins play their final home match of the season on Sunday when they play host to Wright State. First serve at the Boardman Tennis Center is set for 5 p.m.
