Miranda Castiglione's Record-Setting Day Powers Softball to 8-0 Win Over Detroit

Detroit, Michigan -- Sophomore Miranda Castiglione broke the single-game RBI record, tied the single-game home run record and broke the single-season runs record  to lead the Youngstown State softball team to an 8-0 win over Detroit on Sunday afternoon at Buysse Ballpark.

Castiglione belted a two-run home run to right-center field in the top of the first inning, a three-run shot to right-center in the top of the second and another two-run blast to right-center field in the top of the fourth inning to give the Penguins a 7-0 lead.

Senior Haley Knight drove in the eighth run for the Penguins, who improve to 29-22 overall and 11-8 in the Horizon League, with a single to center in the fourth.

Castiglione broke the RBI record of six that was held by Haley Thomas (2010), Autumn Grove (2009), Tiffany Patteson (2004) and Amanda Berry (2003). She also tied the home run record set by Thomas in 2010.

Castiglione, who has scored 43 runs this year, also broke the YSU single-season runs record of 42 set by Thomas in 2010.

The three home runs also put Castiglione tied for third on the YSU single-season home run chart with

Freshman Sarah Dowd went 3-for-4 with three runs scored while seniors Sarah Ingalls and Haley Knight each had a pair of hits for the Penguins.

Senior Casey Crozier pitched a two-hit shutout to pick up her Horizon League-best 18th win of the season. The shutout marks the sixth of the season for Crozier, which is tied for third on the single-season list. It also marks her 16th career shutout, which is second all-time.

The Penguins earned the No. 4 seed and will take on No. 5 Cleveland State, Wednesday, May 10, at 1:30 p.m. in the first round of the Horizon League Championships in Dayton, Ohio.
