Youngstown State senior Heidi Schlegel has been named the Horizon League Women's Basketball Player of the Week for her performance in two Penguins victories during the week of Feb. 9-15. She was honored by both the conference office and College Sports Madness.
Schlegel, a native of Wapakoneta, Ohio, averaged 19.5 points and 12 rebounds as the Penguins earned wins over Oakland and Detroit during the week. She also became YSU's record holder for career made free throws.
Schlegel scored 20 points on 9-for-16 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds as the Penguins topped Oakland 76-54 at Beeghly Center on Wednesday. It was her seventh 20-point outing of the season and her fourth in Horizon League play. Schlegel then notched her 10th double-double of the campaign and her fifth in conference play with 19 points and 16 rebounds at Detroit. Her record-breaking free throw came in the first half to give YSU a 25-8 lead, and the Penguins went on to win 70-65.
This is the second time this season and the third time in her career that Schlegel has been named the Horizon League Player of the Week.
