Youngstown State guard Morgan Brunner has been named the Horizon League Freshman of the Week for the period ending Jan. 16, the conference office announced on Monday.
Brunner averaged 18.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists in the first two starts of her career as Youngstown State earned a pair of wins. Brunner scored 20 points while grabbing eight rebounds against UIC, and she posted 17 points, five rebounds and four assists versus Valparaiso. She made five 3-pointers in both contests.
Brunner is averaging 14 points over her last five games after playing just 39 minutes combined in Youngstown State's first 12 games of the season. Despite being a primary player for just five games, she ranks fifth on the team in 3-pointers with 17.
This is the fourth time that a Penguin has been named Horizon League Freshman of the Week in the first 10 weeks of the season. In addition to Brunner's most recent honor, Mary Dunn is a three-time selection.
Brunner and the Penguins will take a three-game winning streak with them on the road this week for games in the Detroit area. YSU will play Detroit Mercy on Friday at 7 p.m., and it will play at Oakland on Sunday at 3 p.m. Both games will be broadcast live on ESPN3 and 1390 WNIO.
