Sophomore Kathy Baquero scored her team-best second goal of the season and junior Macey Riese posted her first career goal to lead the Youngstown State women's soccer team to a 2-0 win over VMI on Friday evening at Farmers National Bank Field.
With the win, the Penguin improve to 1-2 on the season while VMI falls to 1-1.
After a scoreless first half that featured 14 shots by the Penguins, Baquero, who led the team with five shots and two shots on goal, gave the YSU a 1-0 lead just 33 seconds into the second half from a pass from senior Kearsten Sego.
Just 10 minutes later, Riese's header from a pass from junior Katie Hohmann pushed the lead to 2-0 at the 55:23 mark of the match.
Those two goals were all the offense goalkeeper Katie Montgomery needed to gain the shutout and first career win.
The Penguins' offense was in full force outshooting the Keydets, 29-1, including 11-0 in shots on goal.
Thirteen different YSU players were credited with shots while nine had shots on goal.
The Penguins visit Robert Morris, Sunday, Aug. 31, at 3 p.m. in Moon Township, Pa.
