Senior Kyler Lum converted a penalty kick in the 48th minute and the Youngstown State defense stifled St. Bonaventure for a 1-0 win on Monday at Farmers National Bank Field.
The Penguins improve to 1-1 on the season while the Bonnies fall to 0-2.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kylee Moffett registered the first shutout of her career.
After a scoreless first half that saw the Penguins outshoot the Bonnies, 5-3, the teams were forced to the lockerrooms for a one-hour, 21 minute weather delay due to lightning in the area.
The extra rest proved positive for the Penguins, who came out firing at the net. Less than three minutes into the second half, sophomore Rasheda Abdul-Rahman was fouled in the penalty box while attempting to score.
Lum fired the penalty kick into the lower-left corner of the net for her first goal of the season.
Over the next eight minutes, the Penguins fired two shots on goal - by Lum and another by Alison Green - and two corner kicks but St. Bonaventure goalie Lauren Malcolm was up to the task and made two tremendous saves.
YSU registered four more shots and another shot on goal over the final 18 minutes of the match. In the entire second half, the Penguins outshot the Bonnies, 10-3, and St. Bonaventure did not have a shot on goal the entire match.
