The Youngstown State swimming and diving team was named a College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Scholar All-American team, the organization announced on Wednesday.
In total, 720 teams, representing 443 institutions achieved a grade point average of 3.0 or higher during the Spring 2017 Semester. Part of the reason for the increase in award-winning teams is the overall growth of the sport. The number of men's and women's institutions sponsoring swimming and diving is at a 10-year high.
During the recent spring semester, the Guins posted a team GPA of 3.47.
The Penguins are under the direction of new Head Coach Ryan Purdy who took over the program earlier this month.
Additionally, divers Bailey Dipman, Bethany Glick, Rebecca Stafford and McKenzie Stelter were named Honorable Mention CSCAA Scholar All-Americans. These students have similarly achieved a GPA of 3.50 and achieved a "B" time standard or competed at a regional or zone qualifying meet.
