Penguins Open Season With Strong Performance At Akron

Akron, Ohio - The Youngstown State swimming and diving team opened the season with a dual meet at Akron on Friday at the Ocasek Natatorium.

In the 100-yard freestyle, YSU finished in second and third place as Kolbrun Jonsdottir swam a time of 54.86 seconds while Aida Jurinovics was third at 56.18 seconds.

Viktoria Orosz finished second in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:10.88 and she was fourth in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:57.00. 

Natalie Laurence swam a second-place time of 2:10.35 in the 200-yard backstroke. Also finishing second was freshman Sydney Gonzalez in the 400 IM with a time of 4:33.19.

In the 100-yard breaststroke, Tiphaine Saint-Gilles was third with a time of 1:07.22. Later in the meet she captured a second-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:24.31.

Freshman Aida Jurinovics placed third in the 200-yard butterfly swimming a time of 2:08.50. Madison Aranda finished third in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:51.29.  Jonsdottir also finished third in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.14 seconds.

In the diving events, McKenzie Stelter had a score of 239.85 in the one-meter and 192.07 in the three-meter. Bethany Glick scored a 228.60 in the one-meter and a 210.07 in the three-meter.

Akron won the dual by a score of 188-98.

The Penguins return to action on Saturday, Oct. 21 when they play host to Ohio at the Beeghly Natatorium.
