Head Coach Ryan Purdy Announces Signing Class of Nine

Seven swimmers and two divers has signed National Letters of Intent to join the YSU program.

First-year Youngstown State swimming and diving coach Ryan Purdy announced a signing class of nine future Penguins to National Letters of Intent to join the program. The Penguins added seven swimmers and a pair of divers from five different states.

YSU has added Allyson Wilson (Kings Mills, Ohio/Kings Mill H.S.), Kayla Wrasman (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead H.S.), Josie Preski (Chatham, Ill./Glenwood H.S.), Taci Miller (Baltimore, Ohio/Liberty Union), Mallory Pitstick (Ottawa, Ill./Ottawa Township), Tess Weiskopf (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa H.S.), Elizabeth Wompey (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.), Riley Ernst (Hillard, Ohio/Hillard Davidson), Averi McCarthy (Dayton, Ohio/Beavercreek H.S.).

Riley Ernst (Hillard, Ohio/Hillard Davidson H.S.) | Freestyle

Ernst swims for Hilliard Davidson and for the club team United Swim Association. She competed in the 200 IM and 500 free at the 2017 OHSAA Division I Central, East and Southeast District Championship, finishing 13th and ninth, respectively, as well as on Hilliard Davidson's 200 medley and 200 free relays. At the 2016 District meet she was 14th in the 200 IM and 10th in the 500 free.

In club swimming, Ernst capped her summer long-course season off with new personal-best times in the 200 free, 100 breast, and 100 fly at Columbus Sectionals and the Ohio Swimming Long Course Senior Championships. At the latter, she advanced to the finals in the 200 free (4th) and 50 free (21st), and was a member of three first-place USA relays: 200 and 400 free and 400 medley.


Averi McCarthy (Dayton, Ohio/Beavercreek H.S.) | Backstroke/Freestyle

McCarthy is a versatile swimmer who will swim backstroke and freestyle at YSU. Her stronger events are the 100 and 200 freestyle and the 100 and 200 backstroke. She also competed in butterfly, backstroke and IM. She had a best time of 2:07.02 last year in the 100 freestyle and in the backstroke her best 100 is 1:04.02. McCarthy was part of Beavercreek's 400-yard freestyle relay that placed 23rd at the Division I Ohio meet. She swims for the Dayton Raiders Swim Club. 


Taci Miller (Baltimore, Ohio/Liberty Union) | Freestyle

Miller swims for Liberty Union High School and Lancaster YMCA Swim Team. Her strength is the middle distance freestyle events. She placed 14th in the 200 free and 13th in the 500 at the 2017 OHSAA Division 2 State Swimming and Diving Championships. She also led off the 14th-place Baltimore Liberty Union medley relay (28.36).


Mallory Pitstick (Ottawa, Ill./Ottawa Township) | Freestyle, Breaststroke

A senior at Ottawa Township High School, Pitstick swims for the LaSalle-Peru/Ottawa/Streator swim co-op. She specializes mainly in sprint free and breaststroke, and competed in the 100 breast at the 2016  IHSA Girls' State Championships last November.

Pitstick swims year-round with Kishwaukee YMCA/DeKalb County Swim Team. A YMCA Nationals qualifier, she competed in the 50 free and 100 and 200 breast at this summer's YMCA Long Course National Championships and in the 100 and 200 breast at last spring's Short Course Nationals. At the Illinois YMCA State Championships in March she was runner-up in the 100 breast and placed third in the 200 breast, 12th in the 50 free, 19th in the 100 back, and 24th in the 100 fly.


Josie Preski (Chatham, Ill./Glenwood H.S.) | Butterfly, Backstroke, IM

Preski is a senior at Glenwood High School. She swims year-round with Springfield YMCA Swim Team. Preski fills a need for a long distance freestyle swimmer. She also swims backstroke, butterfly and IM. She was a top-eight finisher in all but one of her events at the Illinois YMCA State Championships in both SCY and LCM seasons. At YMCA Nationals this summer she went best times in the 50 and 100 free, and this spring she updated her times in the 50, 200, 500, 1000 freestyle, 200 butterfly and 200 IM.


Tess Weiskopf (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa H.S.) | Diver

A senior at Shenendehowa High School, Weiskopf dives for her high school and the club team Flip And Rip. She competed this year at the 2017 Kimball Cup and the 2017 USA Diving Junior Region 1 Championships, on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards.


Allyson Wilson (Kings Mills, Ohio/Kings Mill H.S.) | Backstroke

Wilson specializes in the 200 and 100-yard backstroke events. She swims for Countryside YMCA. She has a top time in the 100 back of 59.56 seconds and a best time of 2:08.81 in the 200 back. At the 2017 Southwest District meet she posted a career-best time of 2:13.61 in the 200 IM. He time in the 100 back was also set at the district meet.


Elizabeth Wompey (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) | Freestyle

Wompey is a senior at Ralston Valley High School in Arvada. She swims year-round for Jeffco Hurricanes. Wompey specializes mainly in the long-axis strokes. In her sophomore high school season, she took on the 200m 500 double, winning the latter and helping the Mustangs win the 5A Jeffco League Championships. She swam the 500 in prelims at CHSAA 5A State Championships, and she led off the Ralston Valley medley relay in finals. Wompey competed in the 400 free, 800 free, and 1500 free at Mt. Hood Sectionals this summer and led off a Jeffco 400 free relay and an 800 free relay.


Kayla Wrasman (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead H.S.) | Diver

Wrasman had a score of 387.35 points in the one-meter at the 2016 WIAA D1 Girls State to finish 15th.
