Burak Named Newcomer of the Year; Hankle Receives Honors
Indianapolis, Ind. -- Youngstown State freshman Marta Burak was named the Horizon League Newcomer of the Year, the conference office announced Friday evening. Burak was also named first-team all-league while Lauren Hankle was a second-team pick.
Burak becomes just the third first-team selection in school history. She joins Margaraita Sadovnikova (2009-10 and 2010-11) and Karen Najbert (2004-05) as Penguins who were first-team all-league picks.
She is also the first Penguin to earn a yearly from the league. No former Penguin had been named either Player of Newcomer of the Year. She was 7-1 in Horizon League play this year.
Hankle is just the eighth player in school history to all-league honors after being named to the second team. Hankle had a career-high 15 wins during the year. In the spring she posted an 11-7 mark at No. 2 singles. In Horizon League action, she was an impressive 6-2. It marked the 15th time in school history that a player had won 15-or-more matches in a season.
Combined Hankle and Burak were 34-18 for the season, 24-12 in dual action and 13-3 against Horizon Leauge foes playing all 26 matches at No. 1 or No. 2 singles. Burak won eight of her final 10 matches to end the year while Hankle won seven of her final 10.
