The Youngstown State volleyball team hit .317 over the final two sets to finish off Coppin State in four sets in the opening match of the Coppin State Invitational early Friday afternoon.
The Penguins hit .225 in a 25-23 victory over the Eagles in the opening set, but YSU was held to six kills and hit -.043 in a 25-18 setback in the second. The Guins then hit .344 in the third to win 25-20 and .290 in a 25-12 fourth-set triumph.
Missy Hundelt and Jackie Carlisle had identical stat lines of 13 kills and four errors in 26 attempts, and Aly Ryan posted eight kills while hitting .500. Shannon Watson and Jenna Cavanaugh both had three blocks, and Erika West registered 14 digs. Hundelt added 10 digs for her third consecutive double-double.
The win evened YSU's record at 2-2 while Copping State dropped to 0-4.
Youngstown State led by three twice early in the first set and got the final two points on kills from Cavanaugh and Watson to pull out a 25-23 win. Hundelt was the only Penguin with more than one kill in the second set, and she had only three attempts as YSU lost 25-18.
Carlisle and Hundelt combined for nine of YSU's 15 kills in the third set, and the Penguins led by more than five points for most of the set. After the Penguins took an 11-4 lead, the Eagles were not able to get closer than three points at 19-16. Hundelt and Ryan had four kills apiece in the fourth set as YSU scored 18 of the match's final 23 points. A Watson kill made the score 17-12, and Nikki Thompson finished out the match with eight straight points on her serve.
Ariel Richard had 12 kills, and Gabrielle Otero posted 20 digs for Coppin State.
Youngstown State will play Bryant at 3 p.m. on Friday, looking to win two matches on the same day for the first time since Sept. 6, 2008.
