The Youngstown State volleyball team suffered its first sweep of the season on Friday, losing 27-25, 25-9, 25-19 to Morehead State in its first match at the UNC Greensboro Spartan Spiketacular.
Morehead State got 12 kills from Aryn Bohannon, and Annie Gruenschlaeger posted 11 kills and five blocks.
Morehead State held a small lead for much of the first set until YSU tied the set at 19-19 on a block by Watson and Aly Ryan. More head State pull ahead 24-22, but YSU fought back to score three straight points to force a time out. Carlisle hit long on set point to allow the Eagles to tie the score, and Morehead State went on to take the set 27-25.
MSU then scored 13 of the first 14 points in the second set en route to a 25-9 win in the second set, and a 5-0 run helped the Eagles break away in the third. A Carlisle kill tied the third set at 11-11, but Morehead State's run gave it a 16-11 run. The Eagles never led by fewer than three the rest of the way.
"Our passing broke down today and we struggled to get anything going offensively," YSU head coach Mark Hardaway said. "Morehead State is very solid defensively, and we were out of system a lot. That really affected our team, and we didn't block very well. I'm excited to see how the team responds tomorrow."
YSU will play two matches tomorrow at the Spartan Spiketacular. The Penguins will play the host Spartans at noon, and they'll play UNC Wilmington at 4:30 p.m.
