Greensboro, N.C. -- The Youngstown State volleyball team hit .318 as a team and got match highs of 18 kills and 17 digs from junior Missy Hundelt in a 3-1 victory over UNC-Greensboro on Saturday at the Spartan Spiketacular.
Hundelt had five kills in the first set, three in the second, four in the third and six in the fourth as the Penguins won 25-18, 25-16, 17-25, 25-17. Shannon Watson added 10 kills, and Aly Ryan had seven block assists.
The Penguins had 11 blocks as a team, which help them limit the Spartans to a .148 attack percentage. UNC-Greensboro hit .316 in its third-set win but hit .100 in the first, .000 in the second and .150 in the third. YSU had three serving errors and two receiving errors in the third set.
YSU never trailed in the first set and did not lead by fewer than three after going up 16-12 on a Hundelt kill. The Penguins scored the first two points and never trailed in the second set. UNC Greensboro went on a 7-1 run early in the third set to turn a 3-1 deficit into an 8-4 lead, and the Spartans led the rest of the way. The fourth set had six ties and five lead changes in the early going, but the Penguins led for the remainder after a Hundelt kill put them ahead 8-7.
Youngstown State will try for its second win of the day at 4:30 p.m. when it takes on UNC Wilmington.
