Behind 16 kills from Melissa Deatsch, Oakland swept the Youngstown State volleyball team on Saturday afternoon at the Athletics Center O'rena. The set scores were 25-18, 25-16, 27-25.
Deatsch accounted for more than a third of the Golden Grizzlies' 47 kills, and her .517 attack percentage helped Oakland record a .354 mark as a team.
Oakland went on a 9-1 run in the first set to turn an 8-8 deadlock into a 17-9 advantage, and the Golden Grizzlies won 25-18. They then scored 10 of the first 12 points in the second set in a 25-16 win to go up 2-0 on the Penguins.
Youngstown State battled in the third set, which featured 16 ties and seven lead changes. The Penguins scored the first three points, and the set was within two points from when YSU led 5-3 until Oakland went up 22-19. YSU scored five of the next six points to have a set point opportunity at 24-23, but Oakland held on to win 27-25.
Youngstown State will end its four-match road streak to start October at Wright State on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
