The Youngstown State volleyball team ended the 2016 season in winning fashion on Friday evening, rallying from a one set deficit to beat UIC in five sets. The scores were 25-22, 19-25, 11-25, 25-20, 15-11.
YSU seniors Lori Vanbeek and Val Jeffery led the Penguins offensively with a combined 24 kills on a .465 attack percentage. Vanbeek had a team-high 17 kills, and Jeffery posted seven kills in 13 attempts. Jeffery added 38 assists in eight digs, and she had six of her kills in seven attempts in the final two sets as YSU switched to a 6-2 offense to allow her to hit in her final match.
Kelsie Groot led the Flames with 23 kills.
Down 22-20, the Penguins scored the final five points of the opening set to take a 1-0 lead in the match. The Flames used a 6-0 run late in the second set to even the match, and they cruised to a 25-11 win in the third.
There were eight ties in the third set, the final one coming at 15-15. A Vanbeek kill sparked a mini 3-0 run by YSU, and the Penguins went on to outscore the Flames 10-5 down the stretch.
Youngstown State never trailed in the fifth set. Jeffery's final assist, the 3,217th of her Penguins career, came on a Morgan Tippie kill that put the Penguins up 5-3. Vanbeek's fourth and final kill of the set put the Penguins up 14-11, and the match ended on a Groot attack error.
