Youngstown State head volleyball coach is excited to announce that her first addition to the program will be Alexia Byrnes, a setter who has signed a grant-in-aid to join the Penguins in the fall.

Byrnes is a transfer from the University of Louisville who redshirted during the 2017 season. The Chicagoland native will have four years of eligibility remaining.

"Alexia comes to us with an elite training background and high-level experiences," Scott said. "Her setting abilities along with her work ethic and competitive drive will enhance our gym and team culture immediately. She is an outstanding addition to our roster and I cannot wait to have her in a Penguins uniform!"

In high school, Byrnes earned three letters as a setter and right-side hitter while helping Saint Francis High School in Wheaton, Ill., win two state championships. She was named one of the top 20 setters in the country in 2015-16 by Prep Volleyball, and she was twice named All-Girls Catholic Athletic Conference in 2016 and 2017. She was a setter for the Chicago Volleyball All Star Game in 2016, and in 2015 she played for the USA Girls Youth Continental Team Program where she earned all-tournament honors. She played club ball for Fusion under Coach Mike Bui, and her high school coach was Lisa Ston.

Byrnes joins Libbie Darling as setters on YSU's 2018 roster, and she is the first newcomer to commit with Scott leading the program. Scott was named the 10th head coach in program history in December.
