Team award winners for the 2017 Youngstown State volleyball season were announced on Saturday in the DeBartolo Stadium Club as the program held its postseason banquet.
Senior Sam Brown was voted the Most Valuable Player, and Sarah Varcolla and Lauren Blanco received the Best Offensive Player and Best Defensive Player awards, respectively. Morgan Tippie earned the Most Improved Player Award, Margaux Thompson was named the Rookie of the Year and Carla Relitz and Reis Zandier received the Players Award. The awards were voted on by members of the team.
Academic achievement was also celebrated at the banquet. Dana Borsz and Kalahar were recognized for earning a 4.0 GPA last spring, and Kalahar was honored for having the top GPA among the underclassmen at 4.0. Blanco was recognized for being named Academic All-Horizon League for the second straight year and having the top GPA among upperclassmen at 3.9.
Additionally, Brown and Blanco also received rewards for registering their 1,000th kill and dig, respectively, during the season. Program Alumna Val Jeffery was recognized for representing the USA at the World University Games over the summer.
