Youngstown State senior Lauren Blanco has been named to the Horizon League All-Academic Team for the second straight season, the conference office announced on Friday.
Blanco becomes just the third player in program history to earn academic all-conference accolades in consecutive years, and she remains the only Penguin libero or defensive specialist in history to be an academic honoree. The El Paso, Texas, native holds a 3.90 grade-point average while majoring in accounting and finance.
In addition to her success in the classroom, Blanco is having her best season on the court. She has been the Horizon League's leader in digs per set with 5.16 since the start of the conference schedule. Blanco has been the Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week twice in the last four weeks, and she recorded the 1,000th dig of her career on Wednesday. She has reached double digits in digs in 25 of YSU's 29 matches, including 14 of 15 in league play.
The Horizon League recognizes student-athletes with seasonal Academic All-League Teams in each of its 19 championship sports. To be eligible for Academic All-Horizon League consideration, a student-athlete must have a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or higher (based on a 4.00 scale) and have completed at least one year at the member institution, having earned 24 semester-hour or 36 quarter-hour credits.
Blanco will finish her career on Saturday when the Penguins host Milwaukee at 4 p.m. at Beeghly Center.
