Two Fort Wayne players posted double digits in kills as Fort Wayne defeated the Youngstown State volleyball in four sets to open the Courtyard Marriott-Canfield Penguin Invitational on Friday. The set scores were 17-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-17.
Lauren Hoffman led the way for Fort Wayne with 13 kills and a .294 attacking percentage. Hoffman came into the match with only 8 kills on the year. Nicole Rightnowar was right behind her with 12 kills. She came into the match leading the Mastodons with 104 kills, averaging 3.47 per set.
YSU was led by freshman Marketa Plesingrova, who had 12 kills with only four attack errors. Three Penguins – Sarah Varcolla, Morgan Tippie and Sam Brown - finished with seven kills each. YSU had 25 attack errors on the match, which led to a .169 attacking percentage.
YSU won the first set by a score of 25-17, but it was Fort Wayne's match after that. The Mastodons evened the match with a 25-22 win in the second set and claimed the third and fourth sets by even scores of 25-17.
