Penguins Fall at IUPUI to Begin Road Stretch

IUPUI hit .347 as a team and got 11 kills from Kori Waelbroeck in a three-set victory over Youngstown State on Friday at The Jungle. The set scores were 25-18, 25-15, 25-12.

Margaux Thompson led the Penguins with seven kills and a .250 attack percentage, and Lauren Blanco posted 12 digs. Sam Brown had five kills in the match, leaving her three kills shy of 1,000 for her Penguins career.

Waelbroeck's 11 kills came on a .476 attack percentage, and she added 10 digs. Haley Hoffman had seven kills and seven blocks for the Jaguars, who improved to a Horizon League-best 9-2 record in the conference.

IUPUI scored the first six points of the match, but Youngstown State tied the score at 13 and eventually took a 16-15 lead on a Sarah Varcolla ace. Waelbroeck's kill gave the Jaguars a side out, the IUPUI proceeded to conclude the set on a 10-2 run.

YSU led 2-0 in the second set and stayed within striking distance at 15-11. Similar to the first set, IUPUI pulled away at the end with a 10-4 burst. The Jaguars then scored the first five points and built a 10-2 lead in the third set.

Youngstown State will play at Northern Kentucky on Saturday at 4 p.m.
