Three La Salle players posted double digits in kills, and the Explorers swept the Youngstown State volleyball team 25-21, 25-22, 25-23 on Monday at Beeghly Center.
Bryanna Davis and Devin Corah both had 14 kills, and Samantha Graver recorded 11 kills and 13 digs for La Salle, which extended its winning streak to seven.
La Salle hit .299 at posted 51 kills, and Youngstown State hit .231 with 37 kills.
There were 10 ties and two lead changes in the first set, and Youngstown State led as late as 18-17. La Salle went on an 8-0 run to take a 24-18 lead and closed out the set at 25-21. The Explorers then scored the first six points of the second set and led from start to finish. Youngstown State closed the gap to 11-8 and eventually got within two at 23-21 before falling 25-22.
The third set featured 16 ties and five lead changes, and La Salle was able to prevail despite its largest lead being two. A kill by Varcolla gave the Penguins a 13-9 lead, their largest of the set, but La Salle scored four straight points out of a timeout to tie the score. The largest gap until the final was when La Salle led 17-15. The score was tied at 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22 and 23 before La Salle scored the final two points.
Youngstown State will host the Courtyard Marriott-Canfield Penguin Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The Penguins will play Fort Wayne at 1 p.m. and Saint Francis U at 4 p.m. on Friday, and they will host Akron at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
