Oakland used 10 blocks as a team and 11 kills from Darien Bandel to beat the Youngstown State volleyball team 25-21, 25-15, 25-20, on Sunday afternoon at the Athletics Center O'rena).
Margaux Thompson had eight kills and a team-high eight digs for the Penguins, who hit .270 in the opening set but .027 over the final two. Sam Brown matched Thompson with eight kills, and three Penguins had five kills apiece.
Bandel accounted for 11 of Oakland's 37 kills, and she had 34 of its 93 attempts. She added nine digs, and Oakland posted 20 more digs than YSU. The Golden Grizzlies were also lifted by seven aces.
Youngstown State led 10-9 in the opening set following a Marketa Plesingrova kill, but the Golden Grizzlies pulled ahead on a 10-4 spurt. YSU got within three five different times but got no closer. Oakland similarly went on a 16-4 stretch in the second set to turn a 6-4 deficit into a 20-10 lead. Youngstown State trailed just 20-19 after a Morgan Tippie block in the third before Oakland ended the match by scoring five of the final six points.
YSU will host Wright State on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Beeghly Center.
