East Lansing, Mich. -- Seniors Ryan Sullivan and Alan Burns each posted top-10 finishes for the second straight week to lead the Youngstown State men's cross country team to a fifth-place finish out of 21 teams at the Auto Owners/Playmakers Spartan Invitational on Friday. Freshman Mackenzie Scott was the women's top finisher for the second straight week.
Sullivan placed fourth with a time of 25:09.8 and was the top attached Division I finisher in the race. Burns posted a time of 25:22.8 and finshed eighth ahead of runners from Michigan State and Michigan.
Tyler Polman had a time of 25:58.8 for a 31st-place finish while James Nedrich was 50th with a time of 26:39.0.
For the men, Chris Butler posted a time of 27:07.5, Derek Basinger ran a 27:14.4, C.J. Schumacher recorded a time of 27:17.1, Ethan Sparks had a time of 27:40.3, Cole Lovett ran a time of 27:55.5 and Matthew Mangus posted a time of 28:14.6.
On the women's side, senior Jennifer Muhlenkamp recorded a time of 24:12.9, Raquel Markulen had a time of 24:53.7, Nicole Squatrito posted a time of 24:58.2, Xena Maali had a time of 25:11.0, Morgan Buckley made her season debut with a time of 25:41.7 and Emma Hunkus posted a time of 26:44.8.
The Penguins are idle next week before heading to the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational in Notre Dame, Ind., Friday, Sept. 28.
