Women's Tennis Downs IUPUI, 7-0

Boardman -- The Youngstown State Women's tennis team swept the singles competition and only allowed the Jaguars to pick up one win at doubles on Saturday evening at the Boardman Tennis Center. The victory marked the Penguins first win of the season.

Sophomores Tanisha Welch and Kelly Culbertson paired up at No. 2 doubles to earn the 8-2 win over IUPUI's Vanessa Carna and Dana Gardner. Anna Volkova and Emily Thayer dropped their match to Andrea Burkhardt and Emily Halsapple. However, due to the Jaguars default in the No. 3 spot, YSU secured the doubles point.

In singles action, Volkova swept Burkhardt 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 1 spot. Welch won her match 6-2, 6-1 while Thayer battled for the 6-4, 6-1 win over Carna. Irena Lanc and Culbertson also picked up wins in the No. 4 and 5 spots. Lanc defeated Gardner 6-1, 6-0 and Culbertson downed Lisa Gebhard 6-2, 6-1. Hannah Patten also gained the win in the No. 6 spot  due to IUPUI's default.

The women's tennis team will be back in action next Saturday as it faces Albany and St. Bonaventure on the road.
