Women Third, Men Fourth After Day One
Indianapolis, Ind. --
The Youngstown State women's track
squad is tied for third place while
the men's squad is in fourth after
the first day of competition at the
Horizon League Championships.
On the men's side, the Penguins racked up 14 points in the
3,000-meter steeplechase. Kurt
Michaelis finished second with a
time of 9:11.35 while Nick Smith and
Nick Kruse finished fourth and
fifth, respectively. Tony
Orcena grabbed a fourth-place time
of 31:23.35 in the 10,000.
In the field events, Justin Reams finished fourth in the long
jump with a distance of 22-02 1/4
while Jarrod Davis finished fourth
in the hammer and fifth in the
javelin.
The women's side had a strong showing in the field events
where they picked up all of their 22
points. In the hammer, the
Penguins picked up 20 points, having
the second through fifth finishers.
Danielle Sexton placed second with a
throw of 152-03 while Delores Gaines
finished third with a throw of 150.
Christina Campana and Lauren Girdler
finished fourth and fifth
respectively. Gaines picked up
two more points with a fifth-place
throw in the javelin.
Although they are in fourth place, the men should score very
highly in the second day of
competition. YSU boasts four
of the final qualifiers in the both
the 100 and 200 with Eugene Harris
ranked first in each race.
Three Penguins qualified in the 800
and two in the 400 hurdles.
For the women, Alex Casi qualified for the second round in
the 100 and 200 while Lindsay Frontz
qualified in the 800.
The Horizon League Championships will continue tomorrow at 11
a.m. CST.
