Signees
Youngstown -- Three
jumpers, three sprinters and one
thrower have signed letters of
intent to continue their athletic
and academic careers at Youngstown
State, Head Coach Brian Gorby
announced.
Five of the recruits are local standouts as Emily Wollet,
Lindsey Cobey and Scott Striener are

Dalton and Anthony Barnes are from
Trumbull County. Ashley Oliver
of Twinsburg and Carly Youlton of

Wollet, a standout at Canfield High School, finished fourth
in the 400-meters at the Division-I

at the regional meet. Wollet
was also named to the Mid East Team
as one of the three best senior 400
runners in the state. She
graduated with a 4.0 GPA and will
study physical therapy. "Emily
was the best female track and field
athlete coming out of the area and
will be a great addition to our
championship 4x400-meter relay
squad," Gorby said. "She will
be a great addition on and off the
track."
Cobey, the sister of throws coach Shawn Cobey, is a transfer
from Kent State who will have three
years of eligibility remaining.
Cobey, also a Canfield native,
finished 11th in the Mid-American
Conference in the discus and 17th in
the hammer. She holds a
personal-best mark of 138 feet in

and 46 feet in the weight throw.
Striener, a native of Poland High, finished 14th in the 400

48.9 in the event.
Dalton, a Labrae High standout, battled back from a hamstring
injury to finish second in the high
jump with a mark of 6-6 at the 2004
Division-II State Championship.
He also made the Mid East Team as
one of the top three senior high
jumpers in the state.
Barnes, a long jumper from Newton Falls, was the runner-up in
the long jump with a leap of 22-1 at
the Division-I State Championship.
He was also named to the Mid East
Team.
Oliver was a district champion in the 100 with a time of
12.79 and holds a personal-best time
of 12.2 in the event and 26.2 in the

Track & Field Championships, was the
the 2004 Ontario Federation of
School Athletic Associations Gold
Medalist in the triple jump with a
distance of 38 feet, 5 inches, a
mark that would have earned her
second-place in the Horizon League
in 2004. She also won the gold
in the long jump in 2003 with a leap
of 18-4. |
