Schnitkey Sets Steeplechase Record in Season Opener
Tallahassee, Fla. -- Youngstown
State junior Emily Schnitkey broke
the school record in the 3,000-meter
steeplechase with a winning time of
11 minutes, 12.17 seconds in the
first outdoor meet of the season at
the Florida A&M Relays on Saturday.
Senior Kurt Michaelis also had a strong showing in his first
competition since the cross country
season with a first-place finish in
the 5,000-meter run with a time of
14:49.82. Junior Chris Hine
picked up his first career
collegiate victory with a win in the
3,000-meter steeplechase (9:50.92).
On the women's side, Jeanna Cunningham finished third in the
400 (59.19) and seventh in the 100
(12.74) to lead the sprinters.
In the distance events, Lindsay Wojciak finished third in the
3,000 steeplechase with a time of
11:42.20 while Andrea Bardy placed
fifth in the event in 12:28.04.
Jenn Wenhold, Kim Jendre and Bardy
claimed the sixth through eighth spots in the
3,000-meter run.
In the field events, Katy Williams' throw of 41.98 meters in
the discus was good enough for
second place. Laura Schatz
added a fifth-place finish in the
high jump with a mark of 1.56m and
Alex Casi placed seventh in the long
jump (5.30m). Amy Hill
finished third in the javelin
(31.80m) and fourth in the shot put
(11.96m) while Lindsey Hill placed
fourth in the javelin (31.30m) and
fifth in the shot (11.62m).
The women's distance medley relay took first place out of
five schools with a time of
12:31.15.
For the men, Papis Joh finished third in the 800-meter run
with a time of 1:56.53 while Tony
Orcena finished seventh (15:22.39)
and Dave Mealy placed eighth
(15:27.99) in the 5,000.
In the field, Derek Riker tied for second place in the pole
vault with a mark of 4.65m and
Justin Reams placed eighth in the
long jump (6.52m). Drew Weizer
added a seventh-place finish in the
javelin with a throw of 41.03m.
The Penguins will compete in the Raleigh Relays March 26. |
