Volleyball Opens Horizon League Play at Butler, Wright State
    After two tournaments and 11 non-league matches, the Youngstown State volleyball team opens Horizon League play this weekend. The Penguins visit Butler, Friday, Sept. 14, at 7 p.m. in Indianapolis, Ind., and Wright State, Saturday, Sept. 15, at 4 p.m. in Dayton, Ohio.

The Penguins (6-5) are coming off a 1-3 week last week after falling to 20th-ranked Ohio State, 3-0, and a then-undefeated Kent State squad, 3-0.

YSU snapped its five-match losing streak with a 3-1 victory over Canisius last Saturday.

Senior Jessica Fraley continues to lead the Penguins with 3.10 kills per game and averaged 2.53 digs per game. Sophomore Ruth Boscaljon is a close second with 3.08 kills per game and leads the team with a .303 hitting percentage and 0.98 blocks per game.

Sophomore Dana Leslie has been stellar in the back row leading the Penguins with 4.53 digs per game and freshman Abigail Drost is second with 3.70 digs per game.

Junior setter Karla Everhart is averaging 9.3 assists per game and 2.35 digs per game.


About Butler
The Butler enter the weekend with a 5-5 overall record and have won its last three matches.

Leading the Bulldogs is Porshia Allen with 4.15 kills per game and Jessica Wolfe with 3.33 kills per game. Michelle DeGeeter, the reigning Horizon League Offensive Player of the Week, is averaging 3.17 kills and 3.19 digs per game.

This will be the 14th meeting between Youngstown State and Butler and the Penguins have never defeated the Bulldogs in 13 tries.


About Wright State
Wright State (2-9) is off to a slow start winning just two of its first 11 matches. Tara Geegan owns a team-best .307 hitting percentage and is second with 2.78 kills per game while Samantha Conner leads the Raiders with 3.25 kills per game.

This is will be the 26th meeting between the Penguins and Raiders. Youngstown State has won just twice in the previous 25 meetings.

The Penguins host in-state rival Cleveland State, Friday, Sept. 21, at 7 p.m. in the 2007 home opener.

Barbosa Nabs Tourney Honors
Sophomore Ebony Barbosa was named to the Kent State Golden Flash Invitational All-Tournament Team last weekend after averaging 2.8 kills and 4.2 digs per game. Barbosa notched a double-double with 15 kills and 15 digs in a 3-1 win over Canisius and recorded 19 digs against Kent State.

The Ruth Is On Fire
In 43 career matches played, sophomore Ruth Boscaljon has posted double figures in kills 23 times and has tallied at least 20 kills five times after posting 20 against Robert Morris.

Everhart Continues to Climb
Junior setter Karla Everhart ranks sixth on the all-time YSU assist list with 1,555 career assists. She dished out 140 last weekend. She needs 445 more to become the fifth player to net 2,000 assists in a career and 622 more to move into fifth place on the all-time list.

Boscaljon Nearing 500
With 486 career kills, sophomore Ruth Boscaljon needs just 14 more kills to reach the 500 kill mark for her career. She also has recorded 167 total blocks in 43 matches.

Fraley Approaching 700-500 Club
Senior Jessica Fraley needs to more kills to reach the 700-kill plateau and 32 more digs to collected 500 for her career. Fraley, who has 698 career kills and 468 career digs, leads the Penguins with 3.24 kills per game while averaging 2.53 digs per game.

Leslie Sixth in League
Sophomore Dana Leslie has played stellar defense for the Penguins this season. Leslie, who is also an outside hitter, leads the Penguins and ranks sixth in the Horizon League with 4.53 digs per game. In the nine matches which she played, Leslie has posted at least 15 digs six times, including a career-high 29 against LaSalle (8/24) and 24 against Robert Morris (9/1).

Boscaljon Block Streak Snapped
Sophomore Ruth Boscaljon’s consecutive match streak with at least one block was snapped at 41 last weekend against Binghamton. For the first time in her career, Boscaljon was not credited with at least one block. She tallied six in the next match against Canisius.

‘Guins Set Mark For Best Start
Although they have lost their last two matches, the Penguins set a school mark for most consecutive wins to start a season with five after defeating UNC-Greensboro, 3-1, on Aug. 31.
