Volleyball: Penguins Host Cleveland State in Home Opener

     The Youngstown State volleyball team (6-7, 0-2 Horizon League), after playing its first 13 matches on the road, hosts league foe Cleveland State in the 2007 home opener, Friday, Sept. 21, at 7 p.m. at the Beeghly Center.

The Penguins are coming off two hard-fought, five-game losses to Horizon League members Butler and Wright State last weekend.

After leading the Bulldogs two-games-to-one, the Penguins eventually dropped a heartbreaker, 36-34, 29-31, 30-26, 25-30, 10-15. Sophomore Ruth Boscaljon led four Penguins reaching double figures with 21 kills and six blocks.

Senior Jessica Fraley posted a double-double with 14 kills and 17 digs while junior Ebony Barbosa added 14 kills and 12 digs.

Sophomore Allison Heinz tallied 12 kills and five blocks against the Bulldogs.

Against Wright State, the Penguins won a critical game four to even the match but dropped another five-game match to the Raiders, 26-30, 30-28, 22-30, 30-17, 9-15.

Fraley drilled a season-high 22 kills and posted a double-double with 10 digs. She also posted six blocks.

Barbosa turned in another double with 15 kills and 25 digs and Heinz added 13 kills.

About Cleveland State
Cleveland State enters Friday’s match with an 8-5 overall record and a 1-1 mark in the Horizon League.

The Vikings lost in five games to Wright State, 25-30, 30-24, 30-22, 25-30, 14-16, but defeated Butler, 30-23, 27-30, 30-27, 30-24 last weekend.

Liz Fazio leads the Vikings with 3.39 kills per game while Jenni Ramminger is averaging 3.14 kills and 1.08 blocks per game.

The Penguins continue their homestand against Milwaukee, Friday, Sept. 28, at 7 p.m. and Green Bay, Saturday, Sept. 29, at 2 p.m.

Shine On Shives
Freshman defensive specialist/libero becoming one of YSU’s defensive staples. Over the last six matches, Shives has collected 101 digs for an average of 4.39 digs per game. She posted a career-high 27 digs against Butler on Sept. 14. Shives is averaging 4.90 digs per game against Horizon League opponents.

Boscaljon Among League Leaders
Sophomore Ruth Boscaljon is ranked in the top 10 in two Horizon League statistical categories. Boscaljon, who averages 3.06 kills per game, ranks sixth in the league with a .303 hitting percentage and eight with 1.02 blocks per game.

Heinz Hittin’ Hard
Sophomore middle hitter made her presence felt last weekend at Butler and Wright State. Heinz blasted 25 kills and hit at a .306 clip and tallied six blocks in the two matches. She drilled 13 kills against Butler and added 12 more against Wright State.

Drost Still Ranked
Even though she has not played since Sept. 4, freshman Abigail Drost is still ranked in the Horizon League statistics. Drost is second with 0.47 aces per game and 10th with 3.70 digs per game.

Barbosa Nabs Tourney Honors
Sophomore Ebony Barbosa was named to the Kent State Golden Flash Invitational All-Tournament Team after averaging 2.8 kills and 4.2 digs per game. Barbosa notched a double-double with 15 kills and 15 digs in a 3-1 win over Canisius and recorded 19 digs against Kent State.

The Ruth Is On Fire
In 45 career matches played, sophomore Ruth Boscaljon has posted double figures in kills 24 times and has tallied at least 20 kills six times after posting 21 against Butler.

Everhart Continues to Climb
Junior setter Karla Everhart ranks sixth on the all-time YSU assist list with 1,658 career assists. She dished out 104 last weekend. She needs 341 more to become the fifth player to net 2,000 assists in a career and 518 more to move into fifth place on the all-time list.

Boscaljon Notches 500
With 486 career kills, sophomore Ruth Boscaljon needs just 14 more kills to reach the 500 kill mark for her career. She also has recorded 167 total blocks in 43 matches.
 

Fraley Approaching 800 Kills
Senior Jessica Fraley just passed the 700 career kills mark last weekend and is now inching toward 800 career kills. Fraley, who has 734 career kills, leads the Penguins with 160 kills and a 3.60 kills per game average. Fraley also needs five more digs to reach 500 for her career.

Leslie Seventh in League
Sophomore Dana Leslie has played stellar defense for the Penguins this season. Leslie, who is also an outside hitter, leads the Penguins and ranks seventh in the Horizon League with 4.30 digs per game.
