Penguins Continue Homestand Against
Milwaukee, Green Bay
Youngstown --
The Youngstown State volleyball team
(6-8, 0-3 Horizon League), continues
its three-match homestand this
weekend when it hosts Horizon League
foes Milwaukee and Green Bay. The
Penguins take on the Panthers,
Friday, Sept. 28, at 7 p.m. and the
Phoenix, Saturday, Sept. 29, at 2
p.m. Both matches will be played in
the Beeghly Center.
The Penguins are coming off a
disappointing loss to Cleveland
State, 3-1, last Friday in the 2007
home opener.
The Penguins took control early with
a 30-22 win in the opening stanza,
but Cleveland State rallied to win
the next three games, 30-17, 30-28.
Senior Jessica Fraley posted her
four straight double-double and the
seventh of the season with 17 kills
and 13 digs. Fraley also laced five
service aces and tallied three
blocks.
Sophomore Ruth Boscaljon added 11
kills and five solo blocks against
the Vikings.
About Milwaukee
Picked to win the Horizon League,
Milwaukee enters this weekend with
an impressive 13-1 overall record
and a 4-0 mark in the Horizon
League.
The Panthers, who lost their first
match of the season to 11th-ranked
Wisconsin, have won 13 straight
matches and have lost a total of
eight games in those matches.
Senior setter/outside hitter Leanne
Felsing earned
national-player-of-the-week honors
the College Volleyball Update and
was named the Horizon League
Offensive Player of the Week after
posting a pair of triple-doubles and
missing out on a third. Felsing
averages 3.53 kills, 7.74 assists
and 3.62 digs per game.
Senior Jamie Gabrielson leads the
Panthers with 4.56 kills per game
and boasts an average of 3.52 digs
per game.
This will be the 19th meeting
between Youngstown State and
Milwaukee with the Panthers owning a
14-4 advantage in the all-time
series. The Penguins have not
defeated the Panthers since a 3-1
victory on Nov. 13, 1994.
About Green Bay
Green Bay enters this weekend with
3-10 overall mark and a 1-3 Horizon
League record.
The Phoenix, who play Cleveland
State on Friday evening, are led by
Liesl Tesch with 4.09 kills per game
while Nikki Hintze averages 3.00
kills per game.
This will be the 18th meeting
between the Penguins and Phoenix.
Green Bay owns a 14-3 record against
the Penguins and have won the last
12 meetings. The last time YSU
defeated Green Bay was during the
1998 season.

Fraley Double-Double Streak
With 17 kills and 13 digs against
Cleveland State last Friday, senior
Jessica Fraley extended her
double-double streak to four
matches. During that span, Fraley is
averaging 3.78 kills, 3.28 digs and
4.75 points per game.
Penguins 25th Nationally in Digs
Youngstown State’s defensive efforts
have not gone unnoticed. In the
latest NCAA volleyball statistics,
the Penguins rank 25th nationally
with 18.31 digs per game.
Shine On Shives
Freshman defensive specialist/libero
becoming one of YSU’s defensive
staples. Over the last seven
matches, Shives has collected 113
digs for an average of 4.19 digs per
game. She posted a career-high 27
digs against Butler on Sept. 14.
Shives is averaging 4.36 digs per
game against Horizon League
opponents, which is 10th in the
league.
Boscaljon Among League Leaders
Sophomore Ruth Boscaljon is ranked
in the top 10 in two Horizon League
statistical categories. Boscaljon,
who averages 3.04 kills per game,
ranks seventh in the league with a
.299 hitting percentage and eighth
with 1.04 blocks per game.
Heinz Hittin’ Hard
Sophomore middle hitter Allison
Heinz made her presence felt two
weeks at Butler and Wright State.
Heinz blasted 25 kills and hit at a
.306 clip and tallied six blocks in
the two matches. She drilled 13
kills against Butler and added 12
more against Wright State. Heinz
also ranks fourth in the league with
a .338 hitting percentage against
Horizon League opponents.
The Ruth Is On Fire
In 46 career matches played,
sophomore Ruth Boscaljon has posted
double figures in kills 25 times and
has tallied at least 20 kills six
times after posting 21 against
Butler.
Everhart Continues to Climb
Junior setter Karla Everhart ranks
sixth on the all-time YSU assist
list with 1,704 career assists. She
dished out 46 last weekend. She
needs 295 more to become the fifth
player to net 2,000 assists in a
career and 472 more to move into
fifth place on the all-time list.
Fraley Approaching 800 Kills
Senior Jessica Fraley just passed
the 700 career kills mark recently
and is now inching toward 800 career
kills. Fraley, who has 751 career
kills, leads the Penguins with 177
kills and a 3.28 kills per game
average. Fraley also posted her
500th career dig against Cleveland
State and has 508 career digs.
Leslie Seventh in League
Sophomore Dana Leslie has played
stellar defense for the Penguins
this season. Leslie, who is also an
outside hitter, leads the Penguins
and ranks seventh in the Horizon
League with 4.30 digs per game. |
