No. 7 YSU Takes on No. 2 Cleveland
State in Horizon League

Youngstown
-- The Youngstown State
volleyball team (12-17, 5-11 Horizon
League) earned the seventh seed in
the upcoming Horizon League
Championship and will take on No. 2
seed Cleveland State, Friday, Nov.
16, at 3 p.m. EDT.
This will be the third time this
season and the second time in less
than a week the Penguins and Vikings
have squared off.
This will be the 49th meeting
between Youngstown State and
Cleveland State. The Vikings own a
37-11 advantage in the all-time
series, including a sweep of the
season series this year. The Vikings
defeated the Guins, 3-1, in both
matches.
The YSU/CSU winner will take on the
winner of No. 3 Wright State/No. 6
UIC on Saturday, Nov. 17, at 2:30
p.m. EDT.
About Cleveland State
Cleveland State earned the No. 2
seed in the Horizon League
Championship after posting a 12-3
Horizon League record. Overall the
Vikings finished 20-8.
The Vikings landed three players on
the 2007 Horizon League All-League
Team - Amy Benz, Beth Greulich and
Mel Snyder.
Benz, the 2007 Horizon League
Newcomer of the Year, led the League
with 1.54 blocks per game and a .336
hitting percentage and recorded 2.26
kills per game.
Greulich posted 3.08 kills per game
and a .310 hitting percentage, which
ranked third in the league, while
Snyder dished out a league-leading
1,289 assists and 11.83 assists per
game.
Fraley Nets League Honors
Senior Jessica Fraley became the
second player in school history to
garner All-Horizon League honors.
Last season, Ruth Boscaljon was
named co-newcomer of the year and
all-league. Fraley’s 411 kills are
the third-highest in the league and
her 3.45 kills per game ranks sixth.
Guins Set Wins Mark
With five wins during the 2007
Horizon League campaign, Youngstown
State set a school mark for most
league wins since joining the
circuit in 2001. Youngstown State’s
12 overall wins are the most since
the 2000 season when the Penguins
won 14 in their last season in the
Mid-Continent Conference.
Shives Can Dig It
Freshman defensive specialist/libero
Laurie Shives has been one of the
best back-row players in the Horizon
League in 2007. Shives ranks ninth
in the league with 3.78 digs per
game. Her 431 digs is tied for third
on the YSU single-season list and is
the most digs by a YSU player in the
rally-scoring era. She also needs 18
more to set the YSU single-season
digs record.
Boscaljon Joins 700-Club
Sophomore Ruth Boscaljon is
skyrocketing her way towards the
1,000 career kills plateau. The
Elgin, Ill., native has already
amassed 717 kills in just 61 matches
and 230 games. She owns a 3.12 kill
per game career average and needs
just 283 more kills to reach 1,000.
Fraley Climbing Kills Charts
Senior Jessica Fraley moved into
fifth place on the YSU single-season
kills list with 411 kills and needs
12 more to move into fourth place.
She is just the fifth player in
school history to post 400 kills in
a season. Fraley also needs 15 more
kills to become the ninth player in
school history to record 1,000
career kills and ranks ninth with
985.
Barbosa Joins Exclusive Club
Junior Ebony Barbosa is just the
eighth player in school history to
record at least 300 kills and 300
digs in the same season with 317
kills and 392 digs. Her 392 digs
also rank eighth on the YSU
single-season digs chart.
Everhart’s Career Year
Junior setter Karla Everhart is
having the best year of her career.
The native of Elyria, Ohio, has
tallied a career-best 1,180 assists
for an average of 10.35 assists per
game, which ranks fifth in the
Horizon League. Her total number of
assists is the second-highest in the
Horizon League.
Heinz in Top 10
Sophomore middle hitter Allison
Heinz has been quite efficient this
season. Heinz, who has 195 kills,
ranks fourth in the Horizon League
with a .307 hitting percentage
against Horizon League foes.
Overall, Heinz is 10th in the league
with a .259 hitting percentage.
Fraley Nabs Academic Honors
Senior right side hitter Jessica
Fraley was named to the College
Sports Information Director’s (CoSIDA)
Academic All-District Third-Team,
the organization announced on Nov.
8.
Fraley, who owns a 3.87 grade-point
average in telecommunications, is
just the third YSU volleyball player
to earn academic all-district
honors. Abby Ettenhofer (2005) and
Kristen Meech (2000 and 2001) are
the only two other players to
accomplish this feat.
Everhart Continues to Climb
With 1,180 assists this season,
junior Karla Everhart moved into
fifth place on the single-season
assists list. She also ranks fifth
all-time with 2,362 career assists.
She is also just the third player in
school history to post consecutive
1,000 assists seasons. |
