Volleyball Extends Streak to Four in
Four-Game Win Over Wright State
Youngstown --
Youngstown State (10-10, 4-5 Horizon
League) used a balanced offensive
attack and a well-rounded total-team
effort to extend its winning streak
to four matches with a 29-31, 35-33,
30-21, 34-32 win over Wright State
(8013, 5-4 Horizon League) on Friday
evening at the Beeghly Center.
Senior Jessica
Fraley and junior Ebony Barbosa each
posted double-doubles with 23 kills
and 22 digs and 23 kills and 17
digs, respectively, to lead the
Penguins. Fraley also finished with
a.309 hitting percentage and added
five blocks.
"I'm so proud
of our whole team," Head Coach Joe
Bonner said. "We really competed
tonight. We played with a lot of
intensity and made plays at crucial
times.
"This was a
total team effort tonight."
Sophomore Ruth
Boscaljon hammered 22 kills with a
.386 hitting percentage while junior
Karla Everhart set a four-game
record with a career-high 76
assists. Freshman Laurie
Shives added 22 digs while sophomore
Dana Leslie contributed 15 digs and
three kills.
After dropping
game one, 31-29, the Penguins
responded with 21 kills in the
second stanza, led by Fraley's 10
kills, to even the match with a
35-33 win.
The Penguins
offense exploded for 24 kills and a
.500 hitting percentage to lead to a
30-21 game three victory. Fraley
drilled eight kills and Barbosa
added seven to pace YSU.
The Penguins
jumped out to a 19-13 lead in game
four but the Raiders scored eight of
the next 10 points to tie the game
at 21-21.
YSU regained
the lead 27-26 after a kill by
Allison Heinz but Wright State
scored the next three points to take
a 29-27 advantage.
The Penguins
staved off five game-point attempts
by the Raiders and scored the last
three points of the game for a 34-32
victory. Trailing 32-31, Boscaljon
and Everhart blocked an Alisha
Kimbro attack to tie the game at
32-32 and took the lead on an attack
error by Kimbro.
Barbosa
finished the match with her 23 kill
of the match.
YSU closes
its homestand against Butler,
Saturday, Oct. 13, at 2 p.m. at the
Beeghly Center. |
