Volleyball Looks to Extend Winning
Streak, Host Wright State, Butler
This Weekend
Youngstown --
The winner of three straight Horizon
League matches, the Youngstown State
volleyball team (9-10, 3-5 Horizon
League) attempts to extend its
winning streak to four when it hosts
Wright State (8-12, 5-3 Horizon
League), Friday, Oct. 12, at 7 p.m.
at the Beeghly Center. The Penguins
also host Butler, Saturday, Oct. 13,
at 2 p.m.
Penguins Passionately Pink
The
Youngstown State Athletic
Department, along with the Horizon
League and the Gateway Football
Conference, will work together
during five YSU athletic events this
weekend to raise funds to fight
Breast Cancer as part of National
Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The
Youngstown State volleyball and
soccer teams will wear pink
shoelaces during their two home
events while the Penguins' football
squad will showcase a miniature pink
Y on their helmets during the
Saturday afternoon's game against
Southern Utah.
At
Saturday's football game against the
Thunderbirds, donations will be
accepted at all concession stands
throughout the stadium. During the
soccer and volleyball matches,
donations boxes will be placed at
all entrances.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure

YSU Sets League Win Mark
Youngstown State’s three league
victories are the most in a season
since joining the Horizon League in
2001. It also marks the first
three-match winning streak against
Horizon League foes since joining
the league.
Boscaljon Reaches 600 Kills
Sophomore Ruth Boscaljon turned in a
tremendous week averaging 3.29 kills
and 1.07 blocks per game with a .363
hitting percentage last week.
Boscaljon also just passed the 600
career kills plateau and now has 602
kills in just 51 career matches. She
also has more than 200 career blocks
with 206.
Fraley
Closing in on 1,000
Senior Jessica Fraley eclipsed the
800 career kills mark this week
against Loyola. Fraley now has 832
kills and needs 168 more to reach
1,000.
Everhart
Nearing 2,000 Club
Junior setter Karla Everhart now has
1,970 career assists and needs just
30 more to become the sixth player
in school history to record at least
2,000 career assists. She also needs
207 more to move into fifth place on
the YSU all-time assists chart.
Barbosa
Steppin Up
Junior Ebony Barbosa played a vital
role in YSU’s 3-0 week last week.
She averaged 2.64 kills, 4.21 digs,
0.64 blocks and 3.14 points per
game. Barbosa posted a double-double
in each match last week. She tallied
10 kills and 22 digs against
Valparaiso, 11 kills and 20 digs
against Loyola and 16 kills and 17
digs against UIC. Barbosa also
recorded five blocks against UIC.
Fraley Comes Up
Big
Fraley led the Penguins to a 3-0
week with 3.50 kills, 2.64 digs,
0.93 blocks and 4.21 points per
game. Fraley posted 13 kills, nine
digs and five blocks in a five-game
win over Valparaiso. She also posted
back-to-back double-doubles with 21
kills and 10 digs in a five-game win
over Loyola and 15 kills and 18 digs
in a four-game win over UIC. Fraley
also tallied six blocks against the
Ramblers and two more against UIC.
Fraley recorded 10 of her 21 kills
and hit .625 (10-0-16) in games four
and five against LUC and posted
eight of her 15 kills in game four
against UIC.
Heinz Leads
League
Sophomore Allison
Heinz has been quite efficient
during Horizon League play. Heinz,
who is averaging 2.19 kills per game
in league play, owns a league-best
.335 hitting percentage against
league opponents. |
