Penguins Outlast Rockets in Five
Sets for Opening-Day Win
Columbus, Ohio -- Ruth Boscaljon had three of her
match-high 22 kills in the deciding fifth set to help Youngstown State outlast
Toledo on Friday evening at St. John Arena.
Ebony Barbosa added 14 kills and 15 digs for the Penguins,
who defeated Toledo for the first time since 1999.
Boscaljon had seven kills and hit .700 earlier in the day in
a four-set loss to Xavier.
The Penguins hit .346 in the first set and got six kills from
Boscaljon and three from Barbosa to win 25-14. YSU battled back from an 11-3
deficit in the second set and didn't lead until taking a 25-24 advantage.
Boscaljon finished the set with a kill on a Brittany McNeal serve to put the
Penguins up 2-0.
Toledo held off another comeback in the third set to win
25-23, and it scored the final three points of set four to win 25-22.
The Rockets led the final set 10-7 before the Penguins scored
eight of the final 10 points to win 15-12.
Against Xavier, YSU opened the season with a roar to take the
first set, 25-14. The Penguins never trailed and hit .280 as a
team while holding the Musketeers to a .059 clip. YSU used a 9-3 run to go up
16-7 on a kill by Haley Kapferer, and Boscaljon's kill extended its lead to
20-9. Xavier cut it to 10, but Kaitlin O'Hara's kill gave the Penguins their
largest lead at 24-12.
The second set was nearly a polar opposite as Xavier outhit
YSU .296-.042 and never trailed. The Penguins got within 15-10 midway through,
but Xavier answered by scoring the next five points on the way to a 25-16 win.
The Musketeers hit .550 in the third set in their 25-11 victory.
The fourth set featured seven ties and three lead changes
before Xavier pulled ahead late to win 25-16. The Penguins led by three early
twice, and they held a 13-12 advantage before Xavier scored five straight to
take command. YSU cut the margin to 19-16, but Xavier scored the final six
points of the set to claim the match.
Boscaljon had seven kills in 10 attempts to lead YSU while
Tasha Reid, O'Hara and Karla Everhart had six kills apiece. Three of
Reid's came in the opening set.
Hillary Otte had a match high 17 kills for Xavier, hitting at
a .615 pace.
The Penguins will play Ohio State on Saturday at 6 p.m. |
