Welcome Letter to Prospective Recruits

Dear Prospective Recruit,

Thank you for your interest in Youngstown State University athletics. At YSU, our coaches and staff work diligently to provide our student-athletes with the best competitive advantages to succeed athletically and academically and our University provides a challenging curriculum to help students prepare for life after college.
The mission of the YSU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is to offer broad-based programs, which accommodate the needs and interests of the student-athletes. The Intercollegiate Athletics Department is committed to: the welfare of the student-athletes; academic integrity; sportsmanship and ethical integrity by student-athletes, staff and boosters; fiscal integrity; diversity of student-athletes and staff, gender equity; and community outreach.
We have been privileged to enjoy a tremendous amount of success on the playing fields and in the classroom from our four-time national champion football program and our 2006 Horizon League Champion softball team to our many academic All-American and academic All-District honorees.
Over the last five years, Youngstown State has become recognized as a national leader for its graduation rates and its current graduation rate of 92 percent is an all-time high while its Academic Progress Report (APR) is well above the national average. More than half of YSU‘s student-athletes have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or better while 12 teams own an overall grade-point average of at least 3.0.
During the 2005-06 academic year alone, YSU won three conference championships – the 2005 Gateway Football Conference championship, the 2006 Horizon League Women’s Outdoor Track and Field title and the 2006 Horizon League Softball Tournament crown – and three student-athletes garnered academic all-American accolades. Track and field athlete Jarrod Davis was named to the ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-American First-Team while volleyball player Abby Ettenhofer and baseball player Brandon Caipen were named to the ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-American Second-Team. Caipen was also drafted by the Houston Astros in the 28th round of the 2006 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft and the ninth YSU player to be drafted or sign a professional contract in the last eight years. He is also only the third position player to be drafted out of Youngstown State and the first since 1999.
As a University, Youngstown State offers a broad base of major programs backed by a strong tradition of teaching and research. Youngstown State ’s seven accredited colleges include The College of Arts and Sciences, The Warren P. Williamson College of Business, The Beeghly College of Education, The William Rayen College of Engineering and Technology, The Bitonte College of Health and Human Services and The Graduate School of Studies.
It is with sincere hope that you find Youngstown State University the place to further your education so that you can become a part of the winning tradition that is Penguin Athletics.

Sincerely,

Ron Strollo
Executive Director of Intercollegiate Athletics
