Two Freshmen Lead in Season Opener at Tommy Evans Invite

    Akron, Ohio -- Youngstown State freshmen Kayla Witmer and Jim Ramson lead their respective teams as the Penguins opened the 2007 cross country season at the Tommy Evans Invitational on Saturday.
    Witmer, a South Range High graduate, clocked in with a 5K time of 20:24 to finish 15th. Ramson, a graduate of Poland Seminary High, placed 16th in the 4-mile men's race with a time of 21:48.
    Lauren Blase, a sophomore newcomer from Boardman High, was the second finisher for the women's squad with a 24th-place time of 21:35. Sophomore Lisa Lee placed 27th in 21:40, Madelyn McGhee was 29th in 21:46 and sophomore Dawn Goodwin finished 34th in 22:33.
    Junior Dan Nemergut was YSU's second finisher on the men's side with an 18th-place time of 21:52, and sophomore Justin Dickman placed 19th in 21:58. Freshman Jake Lape finished 24th with a time of 22:11, and senior R.D. Goodright placed 26th in 22:25.
    The Penguins will compete at the John Paddy Doyle Meet of Champions just outside of New York, N.Y. on Sept. 22.
