Matt Sommers is in his first year as a Graduate Assistant for the Youngstown State Strength and Conditioning staff.
Sommers, a former football student-athlete at Kent State, works with the men's and women's tennis programs, bowling team, cross country squad and the YSU spirit squad. He will work with the track and field program with a focus on the distance runners. He also assists with all the day-to-day operations of the department.
Prior to joining the YSU staff, he served as a summer intern with the Texas football program in Austin in 2018. He also had a sports performance internship at KSU last spring.
He was a member of the Golden Flashes football program from 2014-17 where he played on the defensive line. A team captain and four-year letterwinner, he played in 47 games in his Kent State career and was credited with 47 total tackles.
He was a standout at Roosevelt High School where he played football and lacrosse. A second-team All-Ohio selection as a senior, he totaled 421 career tackles, 30 tackles for loss, 10 sacks, six forced fumbles and had an interception. He holds Roosevelt records for tackles in a season and tackles in a career.
Sommers is NSCA CSCS certified. He earnd his bachelor's degree from Kent State in May 2018 in Exercise Science.
