Baseball Hosts Allegheny in First of Two Midweek Games

The Youngstown State baseball team will try to play during the midweek for the first time in two weeks with games against Allegheny and Ohio on the schedule. The Penguins will play Allegheny for the first time since 1991 on Tuesday at Eastwood Field at 6 p.m., and they'll travel to Ohio for a make-up game on Wednesday at 6 p.m. Tuesday's game against the Gators will be recorded by Armstrong Cable and aired on its channel in the coming weeks. The contest will also be broadcast live on the Horizon League Network.

On the Mound

Youngstown State will send a pair of underclassmen to the mound this week against the Gators and Bobcats. On Tuesday, sophomore Padraic Williams will take the mound against Allegheny. He has made two previous starts and pitched 11 more times in relief. Williams is 0-2 with an 11.52 ERA. He allowed three earned runs in five innings in his first career start at Kent State on April 12, but he allowed seven runs in 3.2 innings at Pitt on April 19. Sophomore lefty Blake Aquadro is scheduled to take the hill on Wednesday against Ohio. Aquadro has made five previous starts, three of which have been on the weekend. He allowed seven runs in 4.1 innings in his last start at Milwaukee on Friday.

Scouting Allegheny

Allegheny is 16-14 overall and 5-6 in North Coast Athletic Conference contests. The Gators have won three straight contests and five of their past six over the past two weeks. Allegheny is hitting .343 as a group, and four players are batting over .405. Catcher Ben Lowmaster is hitting .448 with 35 RBIs, and outfielder Eric Hansen is batting .427 with a team-high 38 runs and three of Allegheny's 12 homers. The Gators have a staff ERA of 5.67, and opponents are hitting .305 against them.

Scouting Ohio

Ohio is 19-24 overall and 5-13 in Mid-American Conference play. The Bobcats have lost four straight – once at Bowling Green two weeks ago and three times to Kent State this past weekend. Ohio is hitting .258 as a team, and three players are hitting above .300. Freshman Garrett Black is hitting .333 in 81 at bats, and classmate Taylor Emody is batting .307. The Bobcats have a staff ERA of 4.52, and opponents are hitting .283 against them. Ohio is scheduled to play Wright State on Tuesday.

Looking Ahead

Youngstown State heads back into Horizon League play this weekend with a three-game series at home against Milwaukee. The Penguins and Panthers will play a single game on Friday at 3 p.m. and a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon. YSU and Milwaukee split a doubleheader this past Friday at Miller Park. YSU won the opener 3-2 in 10 innings and fell in game two 8-0.
