Youngstown -- Youngstown State sophomore Kevin McCulloh has been named the Horizon League Pitcher of the Week for the period of Feb. 14-20, the conference office announced on Monday.
McCulloh, a Youngstown native and graduate of Boardman High, held East Carolina scoreless over six innings on Saturday to earn the honor.
The right-hander, making his third career start, allowed just three hits and four walks while striking out seven against the Pirates. He worked out of big jams twice the pitchers' duel that YSU ultimately lost 1-0 in the bottom of the ninth. East Carolina had runners at the corners with nobody out in the second, and the sophomore pitcher threw out a runner at the plate and induced an inning-ending double play. In the sixth, the Pirates had the bases loaded with only one out and didn't score. McCulloh fanned the No. 6 hitter and got out of the inning with a fielder's choice.
Milwaukee outfielder Doug Dekoning was named the Horizon League Batter of the Week.
McCulloh and the Penguins will travel to take on the College of Charleston this weekend.
