The Youngstown State baseball team will try to stay alive in the 2012 Horizon League Tournament when it plays Wright State this afternoon at 4 p.m. Eastern at UIC's Les Miller Field. The game will be carried live on the Horizon League Network. The sixth-seeded Penguins lost 16-3 to top-seeded Valparaiso last night to move into the losers' bracket. No. 2 Wright State lost 19-9 to No. 4 UIC on Thursday and beat No. 3 Milwaukee 2-1 in 12 innings early Friday. YSU went 0-6 against Wright State this season and has lost seven straight games to the Raiders overall
On The Mound
Blake Aquadro will make his league-leading 15th start of the season today against Wright State. It will tie YSU's single season record for starts by a pitcher. The junior left-hander will try to match his performance at last year's tournament when it pitched in all four games and did not allow an earned run in 9 1-3 innings. He earned the win in relief in YSU's elimination-game victory against UIC by throwing 5 2-3 innings. Aquadro also tossed a scoreless ninth inning to earn his first career save in YSU's victory over Milwaukee in the opening round. This year he is 2-9 with 7.80 ERA. He was the Horizon League Pitcher of the Week after pitching a complete game shutout against UIC on April 29, and he beat Butler the following week. Aquadro allowed six runs in 1 1-3 innings in his last start at Valparaiso last Friday. He allowed 11 earned runs in 8 2-3 innings in his two starts versus Wright State this season.
Quick Notes from Thursday
YSU lost a winners' bracket game to the No. 1 seed for the third straight year... Valpo beat YSU in the post season for the fifth straight time and improved to 7-0 against the Penguins in 2012... The 16 runs scored by Valparaiso matched the most ever by a YSU opponent in the Horizon League Tournament. Milwaukee also scored 16 runs against YSU on May 23, 2007, at Les Miller Field in a 16-6 victory... Valparaiso hit five sacrifice flies in the contest. Milwaukee hit three in YSU's opening round game on Wednesday, which means that eight of the 20 runs scored against the Penguins this week have come on sacrifice flies... Craig Goubeaux hit his second career home run in the third inning against Tyler Deetjen. It broke up Deetjen's string of seven straight outs to start the game. Goubeaux's other home run came at Les Miller Field against UIC on March 24... Jeremy Banks hit a single in the ninth inning, which allowed the first-team all-league selection to extend his hitting streak to 16 games. That is the longest streak by a Penguin this season and the longest of Banks' career. He had a 12-game streak that spanned the final 11 games of his freshman year and the first of his sophomore year. Banks has recorded a hit in nine of his 10 career Horizon League Tournament games... Drew Dosch was held without a hit or walk for just the fifth time in 53 games this season. He went 0-for-4 last night.
