The Youngstown State baseball team picked up a 6-3 win in the second game of a doubleheader to earn a split against Oakland at Eastwood Field on a rainy Thursday. Oakland won game one 5-3.
YSU (6-17 overall and 2-9 in the Horizon League) had a season-best 17 hits in the second game against the Golden Grizzlies. Oakland (5-17, 3-7) scored the final two runs to break a 3-3 tie in the first game to pick up the win.
In game two, pinch-hitter Ryan Cordova delivered a two-out, two-run bases-loaded pinch-hit single to right field to give the Penguins a 5-3 lead in the top of the sixth inning. The bullpen mad sure it stood up as Jared Wight and Ryan Krokos pitched 6.1 innings of shut out relief. Wight allowed just three hits in four innings while Krokos had 2.1 innings of hitless relief. Wight picked up the win while Krokos was awarded the save.
Oakland took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Mike Brosseau led off the game with a home run to left field. Brosseau homered to lead off the bottom of the first of game one as well.
In the second, the Guins went in front 2-1 as Shane Willoughby doubled home Matt Sullivan. Eventually Willoughby came home when Aaron Dehn's throw to first on a bunt by Jonny Miller sailed wide of first.
In the third, Oakland went back in front as Tyler Pagano hit a sacrifice fly and Spencer Marenette's single scored Zach Sterry. In the top of the fifth, Sullivan singled through the left side to score Jason Shirley to tie the contest at three before Cordova broke the deadlock in the sixth.
In the ninth, Sullivan doubled and scored on a Willoughby single. In game two, Sullivan was 3-of-5 with two runs scored while Willoughby was 2-of-3 with a pair of RBI. Kevin Hix had three hits while Shirley and Alex Core each had two.
In game two, the Penguins left 13 runners on base while Oakland left 15.
In game one, Oakland jumped out to a 2-0 lead as Brosseau homered in the bottom of the first and Ian Yetsko scored in the second on a double by Pagano.
The Penguins answered back in the top of the third by scoring three runs to lead the game 3-2. Hix singled to third base and Miller walked to open the inning. Frank Califano grounded out to third-base with a sac bunt to advance Hix to third and Miller to second. Alex Larivee hit a RBI single to left field to bring home Hix and advance Miller to third. Jake Fryman came up to single through the right side for a RBI to bring Miller home and advance Larivee to third. Cordova's grounded out to shortstop was enough for Larivee to be the third run of the inning.
Oakland tied the game in the bottom of the third on a run by Brett Impemba to make the game 3-3.
YSU went two scoreless innings before Oakland took the lead 4-3 in the bottom of the sixth with a home run by Spencer Marentette. Oakland scored another run in the bottom of the eighth on a sacrifice fly to make the final score 5-3.
Pitcher Jason Hager of Oakland took the win as Jeremy Quinlan received the loss to make his record 2-4.
The rubber match of the series is set for 1 p.m. on Friday at Eastwood Field.
