The Youngstown State baseball team is slated to host Ohio State as part of an attractive 23-game home schedule in 2015, Penguins head coach Steve Gillispie announced on Monday.
The Penguins will host the Buckeyes for the first time in program history on Tuesday, May 12, at Eastwood Field. YSU will also host non-conference games against Pittsburgh, Canisius, Ohio, Kent State, Bowling Green and Akron in 2015.
Youngstown State will host two Kids Day games in conjunction with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers in 2015 when students from area schools and organizations will attend. Those two games will be April 24 against Wright State and May 1 against Oakland, with first pitch being at 11 a.m. for both.
Youngstown State will begin the 2015 season by playing its first 14 games on the road, starting with a three-game series at Jacksonville State on Feb. 13. That series will be a homecoming for Gillispie, who spent 11 seasons as an assistant coach with the Gamecocks before becoming YSU's head coach prior to the 2013 season. Youngstown State will then play three-game series at Tennessee Tech, at Western Carolina and at Indiana State over the next three weekends. The first midweek games of the year will be at Radford on March 10-11.
Starting with YSU's home and Horizon League opener against Milwaukee on March 13, the Penguins will play 10 of their next 13 games at Eastwood Field. They'll host three-game slates against Milwaukee, Valparaiso and UIC in consecutive weekends, and they'll host Pittsburgh on March 25. YSU will have four midweek road contests at Toledo (March 17), Bowling Green (March 18), Akron (March 24) and Kent State (March 31) mixed in.
The schedule will be road-heavy again to start April as YSU will play on the road for three straight weekends at Oakland, Wright State and Milwaukee. The Penguins will host Canisius (April 7), Ohio (April 14) and Kent State (April 15) in between, and on April 21 against Bowling Green they'll start a season-long eight-game home stand that stretches into May. The other seven games include a pair of three-game series against Wright State and Oakland and a Wednesday game against Akron (April 29).
YSU will play at Valparaiso May 8-10, and the game against Ohio State on May 12 will be the final home game of the season. The final weekend of the regular season will be at UIC, and YSU will look to defend its Horizon League Tournament title May 20-23 at Oil City Stadium in Whiting, Ind.
