Youngstown State got home runs from Brent Gillespie and Alex Larivee, but a six-run fifth inning by Valparaiso was too much for the Penguins to overcome in a 9-5 loss on Friday afternoon at Emory G. Bauer Field.
YSU, which batted as the home team because the series was moved from Eastwood Field to Valparaiso, was in a 0-0 deadlock with the Crusaders through four innings. Valpo broke the tie with four run-scoring doubles in the top of the fifth to go up 6-0.
Gillespie's two-run homer came in the bottom of the sixth and made the score 8-3, and Larivee's solo homer countered a Valpo run in the eighth. YSU's final run came on a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth.
Due to an improvement in the forecast, the Penguins and Crusaders will now play one game on both Saturday and Sunday starting at 1 p.m. Eastern. The teams were going to play a doubleheader on Saturday.
