Erek Bolton, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound catcher from Elk Grove, Calif., has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Youngstown State baseball program beginning with the 2016-17 season, YSU head coach Steve Gillispie announced on Friday.
"We are thrilled to add Erek as the first member of our spring signing class," Gillispie said. "Erek has shown himself to be an elite defensive catcher with a huge upside offensively. He is athletic and physical with a very good baseball IQ, and we believe he will be what every Division-I program wants with an above-average throwing arm."
Prior to his senior season, Bolton was identified as one of the top high school players in the country. He earned High Honorable Mention All-American Honors on the Rawlings-Perfect Game Preseason All-American and All-Region Teams that recognized the top senior high school baseball athletes in the United States. He was also a High Honorable Mention selection on the Perfect Game USA Preseason All-American underclassman list prior to his junior year.
Bolton is the second member of YSU's signing class for 2016-17. He joins JUCO shortstop Fabian Gutierrez, who signed with the program in November.
